OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING...and we're NOT in Oklahoma! We are in Zermatt, Switzerland, home of the Matterhorn Mountain.
That's probably why we are smiling so much. We are SO happy to finally be here. It is like a dream.
The first bridge we have to cross is buying tickets to go up in the gondolas to get as high in the mountains as we can get.
Part 1 of our journey up will be in this little baby.
And so we leave the town of Zermatt down below us.
There isn't much to do at this first level but take a few photos and rush to catch the next gondola that is heading further up into the mountains for closer pictures of the Matterhorn.
We've reached 9,600 feet now and the sun is warm and the wind is light so we are able to actually shed our jackets for a little while before going even higher.
Outside they have a rooftop terrace!
The final leg of the trip will take us up in this gondola.
We're heading for that concrete bunker in the side of the mountain. Once we are out we'll go even higher on foot and eventually we'll be on the top of the mountain next to the radio tower you see.
Our gondola dips WAY below the height of the station before we get there.
Here is the hallway they carved out of the mountain. It will get us to an elevator and a set of stairs to get to the very top.
One of the side hallways goes to this small Matterhorn model that had a ladder on the backside.
Down another side hallway was an elevator and stairs to the top of the mountain where this spectacular view was waiting for us.
Time for a snack (chocolate) at the top of the mountain.
The wind was blowing and it was cold at the very top so we headed inside to the cafe and gift shop combo.
This bowl of "spaghetti" was enough for two.
The last thing to see at the very end of the tunnel was the glacier rooms.
What's this? What's this? A tunnel? A slide? Woohoo.
This room is officially called "the highest glacier palace in the world."
An ice sculpture of the Matterhorn.
Karen, our lunch cafe, and the Matterhorn
More Matterhorn on the way down off the mountains.
We spent some more time on the warm rooftop terrace before heading down to the next level.
The town of Zermatt, elev 5,315 feet, with the river running down the center of it.
Down in Zermatt once again.
It doesn't "matter" what else we did on this day. When the mountain is out it is all about the mountain. As you can see, after our walk around town the mountain started to cloud over. It would be gone from our sight soon enough that evening and we can only see it now in our pictures and videos that we shall cherish forever.
So gorgeous! KB
