Welcome back to our favorite guest blogger, Karen. Here are her thoughts about our day traveling from Milan, Italy to Zermatt, Switzerland.
Relaxing morning at the hotel here in Milan. We packed up and and wrote a Happy Birthday wish to Michael for tomorrow. We catch up on E-mail, FB, and the Internet. Check our train route. E-mail our hotel when to send a car to pick us up.
We watch a little bit of the Americas Cup (sailboat racing) that happened in Naples. Just before we got to Naples and now in Venice they are racing for the America's Cup. Cool.
We pick up a quick small burger at McDs on the way to the train station. We just don't know how to tell if the train has food or not. So, of course, this train has a restaurant car. First we go in the wrong car. Oh we are in car 3. OK, much better seats. There are only 10 seats in this car, but I do have to see and (when the door opens) smell the food. Hmmm.
But, hey, I'm going to the Swiss Alps today!!
We traveled first class today from Milan, Italy to Brig, Switzerland. We were in a train car that mostly had train workers on it. We had two window seats but no one sat next to us so Pat moved next to me and we both faced forward. Pat did some blogging with the computer. I did a little.
Train conductor only looked at and punched tickets. Didn't ask for passports. Swiss guys came on asking if we had anything to declare. Not knowing what they wanted us to declare Pat said English. He just shook his head and left.
We changed trains and we are on the train to Zermatt!!! We got on in Brig and we are on The GLACIER EXPRESS !! Already to Visp; it's 2:00 pm. I'm ready for mountain trains. This is a fun train ride. Reminded me of the Skagway, Alaska train. No journaling getting done on this train. There are not many people on here in this car so we've got window seats to use for pictures on both sides of the train.
We arrive in Zermatt at 3:15 pm, get off the train ,and the the guy is waiting there for us in his little electric taxi.
He takes us to the hotel, the Hotel Daniela, and checked us in.
Upstairs to the second floor, what a nice room. Lots of space, lots of windows that all open up. A huge wrap around deck.
We leave the room at 4:30 and walk in to town for dinner at Biner. I had quiche, Pat had salad with beets (no he didn't eat the beets) and a couple of spring rolls. Then we walked down to the train station shopping along the way. Went to McDs for water and McFlurries and back to the hotel at 7:15. No WiFi.
On the walk back to the hotel what to our wondering eyes should appear???? Awesome and beautiful it's the MATTERHORN !!!!!!!!
After several pictures a few steps then more pictures. We hurry up to the room.........we have that beautiful table and chairs to sit and watch it in the room. It's really cold out, low 30's. So I'm thinking, journaling and watch the mountain till dark. But when I get to the window, no MATTERHORN. OK, out on the deck and up on a chair in the corner of the deck. Oh, yeah, THERE it is. Just the top. Hmmm. I guess that's what they call a "partial view" of the mountain.
Nice mountain hope for better views next day..dad
